Brazil, Cafeina
Catriona from Symposium coffee had the opportunity to visit the Cafeina women’s group as part of our 2022 orgin trip to Brazil.
The Cafeina women’s group began in 2017 when Cocatrel cooperative identified the untapped potentials of the female growers in the cooperative. In 2019, they formed the Cafeina women’s group and since then, the 261 active women in the group have shared information and improved their coffee production. Every March, Cocatrel also launches 2 limited-edition roasted coffees from the women of Cafeina group.
The women in Cafeina are also taking a more active role in cooperative management by bringing their ideas and opinions to cooperative decision-making. Each producer harvests and processes coffee on their own farms. The relatively flat landscape across many of Brazil’s coffee regions combined with high minimum wages has led most farms to opt for mechanical harvesting over selective hand-picking.

Cup Score: 83.50
